You’ve probably heard about the highly popular cosmetic treatment for people in their 20s and 30s, which has been popularized, among other things, by social media: lip augmentation. However, before succumbing to the trend, it’s always good to learn about what isn’t always shared with you, such as recommended methods, medical advice, and potential side effects of this practice. Here’s what you need to know.
1. What filler do doctors recommend for lip augmentation?
In reality, there are several options, with Juvéderm Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Juvéderm Volbella being the most commonly used. It depends on the desired result. For an increase in lip volume itself, Juvéderm Ultra Plus is ideal. To fill in lines on the upper lip, redefine the vermilion of the lip, or restore natural volume to the lip, Volbella will provide a perfect result. Both of these fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the human body, to restore tone and hydration to the targeted areas.
2. Is there a difference between these fillers and Botox? Are they interchangeable?
Botox works by inhibiting muscle contractions, thus limiting the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. Because it affects the muscles, it is not used for lip filling. However, it can be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines on the upper lip.
3. Are there different filling methods?
Yes. Filling the targeted areas can be done with either a needle or a cannula, depending on the desired effect. If you want to redefine the lip contour, the needle will be more precise as it is finer. There are various techniques that experienced doctors can use depending on your anatomy and the desired result.
4. What questions should you ask your doctor if you are considering lip augmentation?
It’s important to inquire about the treatment being performed and its potential side effects. Choosing an experienced doctor is crucial since lip treatment is a complex technique. It’s also advisable to ask about the types of fillers used during your treatment.
5. Will I experience bruising after treatment?
Bruising is a possible side effect of injecting the lips, which are highly vascularized. Different techniques and instruments can be used to minimize the occurrence of bruises. It’s important to consult an experienced doctor who can offer the safest treatment possible. It is also recommended not to take blood-thinning products before the treatment, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol, or cannabis.
6. How long will my lips stay swollen?
The most significant initial swelling will last between 24 and 48 hours. A slight swelling may persist for a few days. We consider that after 2 weeks, the swelling is completely resolved and the optimal result is achieved.
7. How often should repulped lips be maintained? What type of maintenance is required?
Because the lip area is highly vascularized, you can expect to wait up to five or six months, or even a year after the initial treatment for the first touch-up. An additional dose can then be injected for a more durable result. If you wish to achieve even greater volume after the initial injection, a re-injection can be performed within one month following the first injection.
8. If I decide to stop treatment, will I notice my lips sag?
No. If you stop all filler injections in your lips, they will simply return to their initial appearance once the hyaluronic acid in the fillers is completely dissolved. It is even possible that the hydration provided by the hyaluronic acid will last even longer after the product has been absorbed.
9. Must I undergo allergy tests before treatment?
No allergy test is required for Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Juvéderm Volbella. However, your doctor will determine, based on your medical history, whether any tests are necessary.
In short…
Whether it’s to add a little more volume, restore lost volume over time, redefine, or make your lips plump, choosing hyaluronic acid filling will ensure you’re in vogue. But be careful: not at any cost! Consult an experienced doctor in the field to ask all necessary questions and follow their recommendations to have beautiful, healthy, and natural-looking lips. Please note that in all Epiderma network clinics, a medical consultation is required.
