In the field of aesthetic medicine, numerous options are available to combat skin laxity. Among them, thread lift treatment is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. To better understand this technique, we interviewed Dr. Mai Ho, who now offers this service at the Epiderma clinic in Saint-Hyacinthe.
What is a thread lift treatment?
(M.H) – Thread lifts involve the use of absorbable threads equipped with small cones that are inserted under the skin to reposition sagging tissues. This technique is primarily used to treat areas of the face such as the cheeks, marionette lines, and jowls. The lifting effect is immediate, and improvements continue over the next six months following the treatment. According to the manufacturer, results can last up to a year, or even two in some cases.
Who is this treatment recommended for?
(M.H) – Thread lift treatment is mainly intended for individuals aged 35 to 60 with skin that is neither too thin nor too thick and experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity. It is ideal for those who do not wish to undergo facelift surgery but are looking for a more pronounced lifting effect than what dermal fillers can provide.
Dr. Mai Ho also recommends this treatment to patients who have previously had experience with dermal fillers and are seeking additional lifting effects without surgery. This method provides up to approximately 1 cm of lift, delivering visible results while maintaining realistic expectations.

How does the treatment work?
(M.H) – The treatment lasts between 1 and 2 hours and requires the insertion of 6 to 10 threads for the entire face (both sides). These threads are placed under the skin using an aseptic technique and local anesthesia to minimize pain at the entry and exit points.
Is it painful? Does the thread remain under the skin?
(M.H) – Although the treatment is semi-invasive and slightly more invasive than dermal filler injections, it is generally well tolerated.
The procedure is performed under aseptic conditions, and we use local anesthesia; however, it is important to note that this method may be more sensitive than filler injections, making it less suitable for highly anxious individuals.
In terms of recovery, patients can expect mild swelling, discomfort, or bruising, which will subside within a few days after the treatment. As for the threads, they remain under the skin and are gradually absorbed within six months.
Why did you choose to train in this treatment?
(M.H) – Thread lifts has existed for over 20 years, with varying degrees of popularity. According to Dr. Mai Ho, this technique has seen a true resurgence in the past 10 years, particularly in Europe and Asia. She considers this treatment a valuable therapeutic tool to provide patients with a lifting effect without the need for surgery.
